World Cup 1st timers and Portugal's ex colony Angola topped their group and edged out favourites Nigeria to be here. Many of their players ply their trade in Portugal. Angola gained independence in 1975 after a 400-year Portuguese rule.

Portugal qualified comfortably, topping Group 3 of the European qualifying zone ahead of Slovakia and Russia without losing a single match.

Portugal will be determined to avoid a repeat of 2002 Word Cup fiasco where they suffered defeats against the likes of less fancied sides, the United States and host South Korea. Under Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, they have found their scoring capabilities as shown in Euro 2004 where they reached the finals as well as in their World Cup qualifying campaign and will be good enough to go all the way. It will be a tall order for Angola to repeat the feats of Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002. They have achieved their goal, just to be here. Still, a 1 1/2 ball handicap evens up any match but I do not think it will be a repeat of last night's Sweden-Trinidad & Tobago match.
